I am too busy preparing for Namibia, as well as meeting another writing deadline before I leave to fully be able to comment on the wonder that was the Alexander McQueen show. Forgive me. It isn’t that I didnt notice (as is the same with Viktor and Rolf) it’s just that I have been…preoccupied.

William Casby, born a slave. by Richard Avedon

Years ago I went to the Avedon Portraits exhibition at the Met (2002 I guess). In it, you were faced with X-large format pictures of ‘ordinary’ citizens. I will never forget coming across this picture. Around a corner, and there it was. His eyes, his lines, they all tell a story that no one in the Western World can communicate with at all today.  This man was born a slave. And there is a photograph of him. Not some distant painting in the far corner of a museum somewhere.  Photographic evidence of this unique experience. And he would be about the age of my great grandmother. Strange.

Set of the day.

it always comes back to German Expressionism, doesn’t it? And of course this film. So overly stated, so widely acknowledged, so mainstream when it comes to the complete context of the medium. However, it is still so affective.

Okay. So I use this phrase very hesitantly, because admitting to a love of musicals has been known to get people hurt in the past. However I do come from a theatre background so I can get down with a DOPE musical. I used to think that  Tommy, had this competition on lock. (If you don’t know, you NEED find out. witness Tina Turner as the acid queen below)
but now there is something that may be even crazier finding its way to my very own home as I write this.
Stefan came back from Michigan with a bunch of records that we have been listening through. Among them was the soundtrack to this ‘film’. YES its a Melvin Van Peebles comedy musical! And YES the 12″ sounded so INSANE that we immediately amazon-ed that shit! It’s about an ‘imp and a devil’ that somehow end up at a Harlem house party in the 70’s. (shades of Brother From Another Planet) If that doesn’t sound awesome to you, you need to run a check on your idea of a good time. Details to come upon delivery.

the box that is making its way to my door. The movie was cheaper than the soundtrack. Hmmm...

I feel a little bit sick about wanting something so much.

Short of the Day

October 1, 2009

I am working through short experimental film history (obviously never completely enough), out of a genuine love for eye candy. Finally (after being unable to give up the teens and 20’s) I am finding a soft spot for the 60’s. It used to feel too exposed to me. More pretentious than early film. Less innocent and exploratory. But here is my feeling for the day
